The initiative from Braintree District Council’s Green Heart of Essex campaign set out to encourage schools to tackle litter problems in and around their school grounds.

Rickstones Academy received their prize for winning the title ‘The Cleanest School in the District’.  The Academy scored top marks for their passionate and driven Green Team and immaculate, litter free school grounds.  The Academy was also commended on the reduction of litter found outside the Academy gates, which on initial inspection was quite high.  They strived to make an improvement to the area.

To win the title the Council’s Monitoring and Enforcement Teams regularly monitoring the amount of litter outside each school and created an inter-school league table. In addition, they made an unannounced visit to each school during the term to ‘spot-check’ progress. Each school was assessed on the absence of litter and the presence of accessible litter bins as seen on first impression of the school in play areas and playing fields.

Councillor Wendy Schmitt, Cabinet Member for the Environment. “It is so encouraging when Schools join forces with the Council to help control litter and it’s great to see young people showing enthusiasm to do something about it.  Encouraging everyone to do their bit to keep the district clean and green is what the Green Heart campaign is all about. “

Marina Thomas, New Rickstones Academy “We welcome any new approaches to looking after the environment inside the Academy and around the Community. The response from our pupils has been very positive and we are delighted to win the title.”
