Last Saturday, Evolve, our youth dance company at New Rickstones Academy, premiered new work and won two awards, all on the same day. Their piece ‘Behind the Front’ was commissioned for the British Red Cross’ annual dance event, ‘Make Your Move’, held in London. The piece was a new interpretation of the tragic conflict of World War One and explored the role of British Red Cross and the VAD (voluntary aid detachment) nurses who worked in field and auxiliary hospitals throughout the war.
EVOLVE won the ‘Best Dance Theatre’ award for the second year running and gave a professional and moving performance of their piece. It was choreographed by group leader and Head of Dance, Miss Warnock with additional choreography by Louise Lachance (an ex-student on a university placement) and Miss Treacy (a dance and drama specialist).
Miss Warnock said, 'My hope is that this piece will be viewed in the wider local community as a tribute to those who lost their lives in World War One and as part of centenary events. We took particular care to be historically accurate in our use of costume and music as well as using archive letters sent by VAD nurses from their posts and the famous WWI poem, 'In Flanders Fields' by John McCrae. I think all the students involved have learned a great deal about the conflict as a result, as well as about the fantastic British Red Cross charity.'
The students involved raised £150 for the charity and received a Bronze fund-raising award on Saturday, as well as their dance award.he students involved have learned a great deal about the conflict as a result, as well as about the fantastic British Red Cross charity.'
