Two specialisms lie at the very core of New Rickstones Academy: Mathematics and the Arts (Art, Dance, English, Media, Music and Performing Arts)
The Mathematics specialism aims:
- To develop students’ interest and enjoyment of, Mathematics;
- To ensure that each student is given an equal opportunity to achieve to the best of their ability and potential and gain the highest possible levels and grades in national tests and examinations;
- To develop the students’ awareness of when Mathematics is appropriate in the solution of a problem;
- To encourage students to present their results clearly, verbally and in writing;
- To encourage students to devise effective methods of notation and to work systematically;
- To develop students’ problem solving skills so that they are confident of their ability to solve problems in any situation, working independently and collaboratively;
- To develop students’ knowledge, understanding and skills in doing Mathematics so providing the students with the skills and knowledge they may need for further studies, work or leisure;
- To provide and environment in which all students’ achievements are valued and recognised.
The Arts specialism aims to give every child the opportunity:
- To participate actively in creative work;
- To have an understanding of the role of the Arts in society today, encouraging students to reflect upon the work produced by artists, dancers, writers, film producers, actors and directors etc.;
- To learn to appreciate and value Art across times and cultures;
- To raise the students’ ability to perceive and respond to the world they live in by developing a range of skills to enable them to develop, explore and present their thoughts and ideas;
- To gain confidence in exploring unfamiliar processes, old and new;
- To engage in a broad range of experiences to unlock the enriching effect the Arts can have on all of us.
